SAFE Training

Help make UW Oshkosh a safer and more welcoming place for LGBTQ and Ally people by participating in SAFE Training. Members take part in a 2.5-hour interactive workshop designed to introduce you to LGBTQ Culture and some of the issues that many LGBTQ people encountered in their lives. Our training prepares you to become an ally. Trained members will receive our coveted S.A.F.E. Triangle to display as a sign of support. This triangle is noticed by LGBTQ and Allies all across campus as a symbol of support and commitment to our LGBTQ Community.

Our S.A.F.E. program is co-sponsored by the LGBTQ Education & Advocacy Council, Rainbow Alliance for HOPE and the LGBTQ Resource Center.  This program is in place at UW Oshkosh to identify individuals who are willing to be a source of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning people in our campus community.  Our main focus is to provide support for students; however, we hope that this initiative would support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning faculty and staff as well.

Currently over 1300 students, faculty and staff members at UW Oshkosh are identified as allies with a S.A.F.E. triangle on their rooms, office doors or in their workplaces.  The training teaches a basic understanding of LGBTQ lives and how to be an effective ally both in and out of the classroom.   If you become a volunteer, this symbol could identify you as an ally and may encourage students, staff, and faculty to confide in you.  We do not expect S.A.F.E. members to provide counseling but instead to provide an open and affirming environment.

Goals

  • Be Sensitive to our students, faculty, and staff's various identities
  • Understand the challenges of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning in a predominately heterosexual society
  • Confront homophobia in all its guises through educational means
  • Provide support to LGBTQ students, staff, and faculty
  • Promote and acknowledge safe places for LGBTQ individuals
  • Increase awareness of self-defined allies
