Department Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards
Gary Coll Journalism Fellowship
The fellowship was set-up in honor of Dr. Coll’s many years of contributions to the department and his richly deserved reputation as a student-centered professor. He was chosen by the university as a Distingushed Teacher in 2003. Dr. Coll served as department chair, published two books and was the adviser of the department’s honor society. He retired in 2005.
Amount: Maximum amount of $250 per student. Deadline: Third Monday of the Fall and Spring semesters.
The Fellowship is designed to help UW Oshkosh journalism students expand their horizons by providing financial assistance for taking advantage of professional opportunities outside the area. Specifically, the fellowship funding would be used to partially cover travel and related expenses for students who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of an internship opportunity/job shadow at a prominent journalism organization in a distant city, take part in a conference in the discipline of journalism, or attend an academic competition for journalism students.

Diversity in Journalism Scholarship
Established as a way to support and promote the educational advancement of minority students in journalism at UW Oshkosh.
Amount: $500. Deadline: May 1.
The applicant must be a minority as defined by federal affirmative action guidelines. The ethnicities include American Indian or Alaska native, African American/black, Hispanic/Latino and Asian or Pacific Islander. He or she should be an incoming freshman or a new transfer student and must have demonstrated intent to pursue a career in journalism through participation in high school, college and/or other news media and declare journalism as his or her major, and demonstrate the potential for academic achievement at UW Oshkosh. The applicant should describe in an essay (500 words) his or her interest in participating in student media or other news media while at UW Oshkosh in order to enhance his or her preparation for a career in journalism. Financial need may be considered as a deciding factor after other criteria are met.

The Griffith Scholarship for Creative Portfolios in Journalism
Jeff Griffith, a 1987 graduate of the department, established this yearly scholarship to promote the creative work of advertising students.
Amount: $500. Deadline: Third Monday of February.
Applicant must be a Journalism major with at least one full semester of classes remaining before graduation. GPA is not crucial for this scholarship. The portfolio must demonstrate excellent skills at critical thinking, writing, and/or visual proficiency and contain more than just class assignments and be neatly arranged, preferably in a 3-ring binder, for submission.

E. Garner Horton Memorial Scholarship
Mr. Horton was a member of the UW Oshkosh administration and faculty from 1963 to 1983. He was coordinator of public relations and executive director of communication services and taught public relations courses as a member of the department until his retirement. He also was executive director of Northeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association (NEWSPA), an organization available to assist high school newspapers and yearbooks with their publications by hosting an annual contest and annual conference held on campus. He died in September 1988. His family and friends established this memorial in his honor.
Amount: Approximately $250. Deadline: Third Monday of February.
Applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in journalism with an emphasis on Public Relations and have at least a 3.0 overall GPA. He or she should have a strong career interest in public relations and exhibit an understanding and a commitment to the professional standards that are expected of PR practitioners.

David J. Lippert Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Lippert came to UW Oshkosh to head the journalism department in 1966 and served as chair until his untimely death in 1983 in an automobile accident. The success of the department and that of the college newspaper, The Advance-Titan, was due to Dr. Lippert’s guidance. In 1977 he gained accreditation for the UW Oshkosh Journalism program. Dr. Lippert was a well-known newsman in Wisconsin, active in many organizations. His family established the memorial in this honor.
Amount: $1,000 or two-$500. Deadline: Third Monday of February.
The applicant is a junior or senior student majoring in journalism with the emphasis on News-Editorial/Writing-Editing. They must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA with a strong career interest in newspapers and an understanding of the commitment a journalist makes to the ideal of responsible journalism.

Multicultural Media Award
Bill and Chris Flitter, UW Oshkosh alumni, established this award for journalism majors to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of multicultural issues and diversity in the media.
Amount: Approximately $500. First, Second, Third Places may be given. Deadline: Third Monday of April.
The recipients should be journalism majors who are in good academic standing. Any journalism student, regardless of race or ethnicity, is eligible and is encouraged to apply. A student’s knowledge of, and interest in, multicultural issues in the media will be a strong factor in the final decision.

Scholarship for the Advancement of Interactive Advertising
Established by Bill Flitter, a 1996 UW Oshkosh journalism alumnus, to ready journalism majors to meet the challenges faced by today’s interactive and direct marketers who need to have their message read and understood in the shortest amount of time using the least amount of words.
Amount: $1,000. Deadline: Third Monday of February.
The applicant is a junior or senior with at least one full semester of classes remaining before graduation. They must be a full-time UW Oshkosh Journalism major in the Advertising area with a strong interest in Direct-Response and Interactive Advertising. The applicant must have at least a 2.5 overall GPA and be involved in extracurricular activities either on campus or off (athletic participation may not be considered).

Virginia A. Sokolowski Memorial Scholarship
Jinny graduated from the Journalism Department, news-editorial sequence, in June 1985 and worked as a reporter until her death in 1987, due to a rare disease that deteriorates the muscles. Her family and friends established the memorial in her honor.
Amount: Approximately $250. Deadline: Third Monday of February.
The applicant is a junior or senior majoring in journalism with the emphasis on News-Editorial/Writing-Editing, and has at least a 3.0 overall GPA. He or she must have a strong career interest in professional journalism, evidenced by experience on the staff of the Advance-Titan or other newspaper or by the intention to seek and hold a student internship on a newspaper staff. Such evidence shall be substantiated by submission of clips of news articles, features, columns, editorials or other appropriate journalistic expressions or by correspondence or contact with a member of a newspaper staff regarding an internship.

State Scholarships
WHPRMS 2009 Carol Scaife Memorial Scholarship
Purpose: To provide a college student interested in healthcare marketing and public relations an opportunity to learn more about the profession and network with individuals in the field.
Deadline: Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2009
Submit:
- A resume;
- An essay of 1,000 words or less expressing interest in and a commitment to healthcare marketing and public relations, and receipt of accomplishments, honors and awards;
- Two letters of reference.
Application: In the red Scholarship binder near the Internship carousel in the Journalism Department.
WNA Foundation Scholarships
Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation scholarships are available annually for print journalism students working toward their associate or baccalaureate degrees.
Two $1,500 scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year were awarded at the WNA annual convention on Jan. 29-30, 2009, in Green Bay.
Scholarship guidelines
WNA Foundation Scholarship applications are accepted in the fall. Applicants should demonstrate a solid interest in print journalism. Students should send a personal letter of application listing their academic interests and record, internship information and other pertinent information.
Applicants will be considered based on their academic record, financial need, past involvement in student or other newspapers, and potential for a career in newspapers. Students with interests in reporting, editing, advertising, photography, graphics, circulation, marketing or any other aspect of newspapers operations may apply. Applicants must include a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or department chair.
National Scholarships and Fellowships
Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences
-Four scholarships of $4,000 each for the 2009-2010 academic year for college students pursuing a career in the television industry. Applicants must have attained senior level status, be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program as of the Fall term of 2009 OR be enrolled in a graduate degree program in that term. The Asian American Journalists Association
- CNN - A $25,000 scholarship to a high school student interested in a career in television news. The award will be distributed over four years.
- Cox Foundation Scholarships: Two scholarships of $1,250 each to college students pursuing a career in print, broadcast or photo journalism.
- S.I. Newhouse Foundation Scholarship: Awards of up to $5,000 each to high school or college students pursuins a career in print or online journalism.
- Mary Moy Quan Ing Memorial Scholarship: $2,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is enrolling in college and pursuing a journalism career.
There are two applications: one for the CNN Scholarship and another for the other national scholarships.

The Hispanic Link Journalism Foundation and the Scripps Howard Foundation
The Hispanic Link Journalism Foundation and the Scripps Howard Foundation are offering three journalism fellowships open to juniors and incoming seniors. One student will be selected for each semester and will receive a stipend of $2,500 plus free housing in Northwest Washington, D.C. near the National Zoo. The selected fellow will be placed with the Washington, D.C.-based Hispanic Link News Service, which covers national affairs with an emphasis on their impact on 49 million U.S. Hispanics.
