| Advertising/Public Relations Emphasis
Students interested in working in the advertising or public relations fields should enroll in the advertising/PR emphasis offered by the journalism department. This emphasis focuses on teaching the student the skills necessary to create advertising and public relations campaigns and materials such as direct mail pieces, brochures, and print advertising. Journalism majors are required to take 36 journalism credits to graduate. Some of the core courses that ad/PR majors must take include: law of mass communication, principles of PR, principles of advertising, PR techniques, and advertising copy, layout and production. It is also recommended that students pursue a minor or second major that will support their specific career goals. Ad Club and the Public Relations Student Society of America are organizations on campus that offer professional guidance to the ad/PR student.
