Writing/Editing Emphasis

The journalism program offers an emphasis on writing and editing. Students with career aspirations in reporting, magazine writing and freelance writing should enroll in this emphasis.

Among the required courses for the writing/editing emphasis are:

  • Reporting
  • Advanced Reporting
  • Feature Writing
  • Interpretive Writing

Students are encouraged to pursue a minor or second major that fits in with their specific career goals. There are several student organizations at UWO that cater to the writing/editing student. The campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists offers meetings and projects that allow students to learn from professionals in the field. Writing/editing majors also write for the Advance-Titan, the award winning weekly student newspaper at UWO. Graduates from the writing/editing emphasis have found employment in newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations and government agencies.

“The well-rounded curriculum gave me the opportunity to take courses in a wide variety of disciplines and tested my versatility...an important advantage in this ever-evolving media job market.
