2016 NEWSPA Conference information

Dear Adviser,

The NEWSPA Board of Directors is putting together another outstanding Spring Conference for high school journalists and their advisers. The conference is Wednesday, April 20, on the UW Oshkosh campus. The location of the conference will be the newest thing this year since Reeve Memorial Union is undergoing renovation. Instead, sessions will be held in both Gruenhagen Conference Center  and the Alumni Welcome and Conference Center.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the entrance area of Gruenhagen. Schools that have preregistered may pick up their packets at the registration tables. After registering, you may proceed to the first session, which starts at 8:30 a.m.

We will again offer sessions at three times — 8:30 a.m., 9:20 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. — and a keynote speaker at 11 a.m. Professional journalists and high school and college students and faculty will present the various 40-minute sessions. The advisers' meeting/luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. in the Alumni Welcome and Conference Center, located across the road from Gruenhagen.

The awards ceremonies start at 1 p.m. and should end around 1:30 p.m. Both ceremonies for small and medium schools will be held in in the Alumni Welcome and Conference Center

This year NEWSPA is again offering a $500 scholarship to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of a deserving high school journalism student. The scholarship, funded by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, will be awarded to a student planning to attend college and major in a journalism field. Preference will be given to students attending UW-Oshkosh. Click on the Scholarship link on the left for more information. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2016.

NEWSPA is also offering FREE conference registration to two minority students and one minority adviser at each high school. The registration form must be filled out for each minority student and minority adviser attending the April 22 conference.  NEWSPA is also offering funding to schools that need help paying for busing or substitute teachers. Click here for the financial assistance form.

The conference program will be linked below closer to the event. Students are on their own for lunch. Nearby restaurants on Wisconsin Avenue will give students a variety of food to chose from.

In addition, we ask that you turn in a signed permission slip from all of your students attending so we can use their image online, in our newsletters and for other promotional activities. For those 18, they just need to sign it. Those under 18 will need a parent's signature.

Registration fees for the 2016 conference are as follows:

Preregistered member schools

  • $8 per student
  • $10 per adviser

Non-member & non-preregistered schools

  • $15 per student
  • $20 per adviser
