2013 NEWSPA Conference information

Dear Adviser,

The NEWSPA Board of Directors is putting together another outstanding Spring Conference for high school journalists and their advisers. The conference is Wednesday, April 17, on the UW Oshkosh campus.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the hallway area outside the Reeve Union Ballroom 227 on the second floor. Schools that have preregistered may pick up their packets, including programs, nametags and adviser materials, at the registration tables. After registering, you may proceed to the first session, which starts at 8:30 a.m.

We will again offer sessions at three times — 8:30 a.m., 9:20 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. — and a keynote speaker at 11 a.m. Professional journalists and high school and college students and faculty will present the various 40-minute sessions. The advisers' meeting/luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. in Reeve Union 201.

The awards ceremonies start at 1 p.m. and should end around 1:30 p.m. The ceremony for small and medium schools will be held in Reeve Union Ballroom 227 B/C, and the large schools ceremony is in Reeve Union Ballroom 227 A/B.

This year NEWSPA is offering two $500 scholarship to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of deserving high school journalism students at the awards ceremonies. One scholarship will be awarded to a student planning to attend UW-Oshkosh and major in a journalism field; a second scholarship, funded by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association,  will be awarded a student planning to major in a journalism field at any college. Click on the Scholarship link on the left for more information. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2013.

Until funds run out, a Diversity Innovation Grant will also continue to provide FREE conference registration to two minority students and one minority adviser at each high school. The registration form must be filled out for each minority student and minority adviser attending the April 17 conference.

The conference program is inked belowl. Students are on their own for lunch. Reeve Memorial Union offers a variety of food in the food court, and there are also fast food places close to campus on Wisconsin Street.

In addition, we ask that you turn in a signed permission slip from all of your students attending so we can use their image online, in our newsletters and for other promotional activities. For those 18, they just need to sign it. Those under 18 will need a parent's signature.

Registration fees for the 2013 conference are as follows:

Preregistered member schools

  • $8 per student
  • $10 per adviser

Non-member & non-preregistered schools
