The following are course descriptions for the interactive Web management major. General education requirements are based on the bulletin year the student enters the program.

BUS 111: Creating the Digital Future

This course explores the impact of emerging interactive technologies on business and society from social, psychological, technical, legal, creative and entrepreneurial perspectives. It provides an overview of the myriad of issues surrounding the introduction of new mobile, collaborative, social networking technologies, and their assimilation into society and commerce. The course will involve significant hands-on work. Specific topics to be covered in the course include: information security and privacy, new ways of organizing work and supporting collaboration, use of interactive technologies to support marketing and advertising, creation of new high-tech businesses, and the impact of emerging technologies on users.

BUS 198: Introduction to Business

The course is designed as an introductory course for all students interested in learning more about business. Students will be exposed to many different aspects of the world of business. A primary objective of the course is to broaden both the interests and horizons of early-level university students toward understanding the dynamics of business and business careers. Lectures, readings, presentations by guest speakers, videos, etc. will be utilized to facilitate student's learning.

JOURN 141: Introduction to Journalism and Mass Communication

The process and effects of mass communication, mass media industries, the functions of the mass media in society and issues that mass communicators face in their careers. It also covers specialization in the media, globalization of the media, fragmented audiences and new media and technology.

CS 142/221: Elementary Programming in Visual Basic or Java

Students need a basic understanding of programming and problem solving. Either of these two standard introductory programming courses will provide this background.

Prerequisite for CS 142: Math 103 w/C.

Prerequisite for CS 221: CS142 or MATH 104, 018, 204, or 206 w/C.

CS 125: Web Development

This course introduces students to simple Web development based on technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Topics also include evaluation/critique of Web design, multimedia (Photoshop, Flash, and audio).

BUS 311: Essentials of Information Systems

This course covers essential business aspects of information systems such as networks, databases, the Internet, management reporting, software development, computer hardware and information ethics. The course also examines the use of information systems for managerial decision making and for gaining strategic advantage. Students will have hands-on experience developing data base systems and with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.

Prerequisite: 44 credits completed and combined GPA of 2.4 or better or admission to the College of Business.

BUS 371: Essentials of Marketing

Topics reflect decisions businesses make such as how to segment markets and target groups of buyers, what products/services to develop, how to set prices, how to advertise and promote products/services, and how to get products/services to customers. Other issues discussed include personal selling, market research, market strategy and how people buy. Several applied assignments exist, both qualitative and quantitative. Students entering the course are expected to have good algebra and other basic math skills; knowledge of Microsoft Excel is a plus.

Prerequisite: 60 credits completed and cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.

BUS 390: Internet Platform Management

This course covers the basic technologies needed to understand and manage a modern Web system. This includes the design and implementation of databases, networking, Web servers and general website operations. The course also discusses issues of ensuring data and user security, confidentiality and privacy. Specific topics to be included are: the TCP/IP model, Ethernet and wireless networks, Web server set up and administration, contracting with Web hosting services, managing service contracts, Internet security considerations, Web database design and implementation and considerations for mobile access.

Prerequisite: Essentials of IS (BUS 311), Web Development (CS125); 60 credits completed and combined GPA of 2.5 or better, or admission to the College of Business.

BUS 392: Technology Innovation

This course explores innovation of new technologies to provide students with an understanding of at how technologies emerge and are adopted, how innovation works in practice, and why some technologies are more successful and are adopted faster than others, as well as the business implications for established companies and new entrants. This will also include discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of being an early adopter vs. a laggard in adopting new technologies. The course will also give students an opportunity to explore new and emerging technologies that may become important in the marketplace over the next few years.

Prerequisite: BUS 311; 60 credits completed and combined GPA of 2.5 or better or admission to the College of Business.

JOURN 340: New and Emerging Media

Surveys new and emerging forms of media, covering theory and concepts surrounding their impact and development within the global communications landscape. Use of new media tools augments learning. Topics include media evolution with the Internet, social media and mobile technologies; democratic, economic and cultural implications; convergence; strategic communication for advertising, marketing and public relations; uses of corporations, organizations, government and grass-roots groups; and broader issues of transparency, diversity and ethics.

JOURN 440: Application of New and Emerging Media

This course is designed to provide realistic learning experiences in the research, planning, execution and evaluation of the use of new and emerging media as applied to the practice of public relations. All class members will produce actual public relations projects for various campus and community organizations that expect a professional level of quality. Students will also be expected to devise a new media policy for their clients.

CS 347: Usability

This course presents the basic theory and professional views on design and usability, with an emphasis on interactive, Web-based environments. The nature of life in general requires understanding of how people think and act. What makes a well-designed door versus a poorly designed door? Understanding the answer scientifically is based on understanding people and usability, not the mechanics of doors. What needs to be kept in mind to create – or use – a safe, usable environment for people? This class will focus on several basic principles that range from defining usability, design, sketches, and how to evaluate usability.

Prerequisite: CS 142 or CS 221 and Econ 210 OR (other stat course).

BUS 463: Internet Marketing

This course builds on the general understanding of marketing developed in the introductory marketing course, and focuses on how the Internet has changed traditional marketing practices and may continue to influence marketing and advertising in the future. There is a clear emphasis on interactive Web-based user experiences that support marketing strategy and objectives. Specific topics covered in the course include: the impact of online retailing on consumer behavior, the development and expansion of Internet-enable niche markets based on lifestyle or interest-based segmentation, online market research, key components of a strong online marketing plan, the effect of "friction-free" markets on pricing decisions and product positioning, customer tracking and the delivery of online services.

Prerequisite: Essentials of Marketing (BUS 371); 60 credits completed and combined GPA of 2.5 or better or admission to the College of Business.

BUS 488: IWM Portfolio Seminar

Every student in the IWM major is required to develop a digital portfolio that documents significant work they have created throughout their studies. This course is led by an instructor who serves mostly as an advisor to students on how to complete their portfolios, as well as evaluate their content for assessment purposes. That instructor will involve advisory board members and other faculty members in the evaluation.

Prerequisite: Senior standing (last semester of enrollment); combined GPA of 2.5 or better, or admission to the College of Business; completion or concurrent enrollment in BUS 492 (Internship) or 442 (Business Cooperative Study) or Journalism 427 (Internship) or Computer Science 399 (Internship); AND have submitted a graduation application.

CS 399: Internship in Computer Science

An internship experience with a cooperating organization or corporation to provide on-the-job learning. Internships may be arranged at any time.

Prerequisite: 75 credits toward graduation, at least six credits of 300-400 level Computer Science courses. Concurrent registration in Intrdscp 208 (Professional Career Skills in Math and Natural Science, 1 credit ) or completion of Intrdscp 208 with a passing grade.

JOURN 427: Professional Journalism Internship

Professional experience in reporting, editing, photography, advertising, public relations or other areas of journalism acquired at newspapers or other media organizations, industries, advertising or public relations agencies, or other organizations.

Prerequisite: Journalism 141 with a grade of C or better, completion of course work appropriate to the internship and consent of internship coordinator. Pass/Fail course.

BUS 492: Business Administration Internship

A 'real world' practical experience intended to supplement the student's classroom education. This learning/work experience will enhance the student's perception of business administration principles learned in the classroom relative to actual pros and cons in an on-going organizational environment. This exposure will add to the student's professional and personal development.
