Using Podcast Capture to Record in Classrooms
Prior to attempting to record, instructors should first submit the form located at http://uwosh.edu/itunes/courseaccess.php. You will be contacted after your course has been created and offered face-to-face instruction.
Restart the computer; boot MacOSX
All classroom computers are dual boot Macintosh machines. When you restart, you will be presented with icons for WinXP or MacOSX. use the arrow keys and enter to choose MacOSX.
Launch Podcast Capture
Once the Mac has finished booting, check the time in the upper right corner of the screen. If it is not correct, right click on it, and choose "Date and Time Preferences". This should force the time to correct itself.
Locate
podcast capture and launch it. Most campus computers will have it on the
dock (the menu along the bottom of your screen). You can also find it within
applications | utilitities. Podcast Capture is located in Applications,
Utilities. Choose the "
"
at the bottom of your screen, click on "
" in
the left menu bar. Locate the "Utilities" folder and find podcast capture
within.
Set up the mic.
Classrooms for podcasting have a small wireless usb mic on the podium next to the computer. To activate the mic, pick it up off of the base. You will see a red LED flashing on the top of the mic. Press the mute button on top of the mic once. The LED will flash green. This indicates you are ready to record. clip the mic to your torso for best sound. The mic will record your voice well, but will not pick up student questions. For best results, repeat questions that students ask before you answer them to ensure they are present on the recording.
Connect to the server
After launching podcast capture, you will be prompted for server info,
user name, and password.
Server should be "podcast 1.uwosh.edu"
Username should be the same as your campus user name. The password
will be provided by the iTunesU admin. (follow these instructions to change
your password)
Click "connect"
Record
You'll
be presented with four choices. Most instructors choose to do a screen recording,
which will record the contents of your monitor and the audio coming from
the mic.
An Audio recording will just record the mic audio.
A Video recording will record from the computers interal camera.
File will allow you to upload a previously recorded file. This is generally not used in classroom recording.
After you click on video, you will be presented with a preview window.
Verify that "REVOLABS XTAG" is selected as your mic in the drop down option
box
. When you are ready to record click on the large at the bottom of
this window is a
large red button.
Click on this to begin recording. The program will count
down from three, then begin to count up. you are recording once the timer
begins counting up.
Publishing
During your recording the "record button" appears as a pause button. Press this to stop recording. When you have done so, you will be given three choice: "start over", the recording button, and "Publish"
Start Over
will delete everything you have recorded to this point. The Recording button
will resume your recording, and publish will take allow you to upload your
files.
After you click publish, you'll be prompted to choose a workflow and
name the file. Most instructors will only have one workflow available,
instructors that are recording mulitple courses need to check that they
are uploading to the correct workflow.
Name the file, and choose submit. You will get 2 messages; first "your file is being submitted" then "your file has been submitted. Once you have seen both messages, the file has been sent to the server .
Do not close Podcast Capture until you have seen the "successfully submitted" message. If it seems as though this message comes too quickly it probably has. Ocassionally it takes a few seconds for it to load the "your podcast is being submitted message. It should take about a minute for the recording to finish.
Once your file is submitted, it will be processed by the podcasting server. An
audio only version will be created and a ipod ready video version will be created. Both
files will be uploaded automatically to your iTunesU course. You will recieve
an email when your file is finished uploading. An hour long course is usually
uploaded within 2 hours of completion.
