STUDENT TECHNOLOGY FEE, 2000-2001

This report describes uses of the 2000-2001 Student Technology Fee at UW Oshkosh.
Several of the projects or items detailed below were approved in earlier years and continue
as permanently funded projects. The remaining one-time expenditures were approved after
review and recommendations from the Student Technology Fee Committee.

STAFFING TO SUPPORT STUDENT COMPUTING (LABS, SOFTWARE, NETWORK,
        AND MAINTENANCE):

Three full-time support positions (a PC technician, a PC/LAN technician, and a Lab Manager) continued in 2000-2001. These positions collectively substantially increase the staff assistance available to support student computing needs. All three positions will continue to be funded from the Student Technology Fee in subsequent years.

Expenditures: $112,700

CONTINUED ENHANCED STUDENT COMPUTER LAB ACCESS AND ASSISTANCE:

The Radford Computer Lab, the University's largest general access computer lab with 130 workstations, continued as a 24-hour lab. Student Technology Fee funds were used to hire student lab assistants for the Lab's extended hours and to provide a second lab consultant during "peak hours". In addition, the Student Technology Fee was used for student lab consultants in the Polk Computer Lab (funded by the Technology Fee in 1996-97), including extending the Polk Lab hours to provide a better match between the hours for Polk Library and the computer lab. The Student Technology Fee also paid for annual maintenance on the security devices installed on the Radford exterior building door and lab door; these devices allow the 24-Hour Lab to be open while the rest of the building is closed.

Expenditures: $75,500

        SOFTWARE SITE LICENSES:

Annual computer lab licenses for Waterloo Maple and SPSS were renewed.

Expenditures: $3,900

        USENET NEWS SERVICE:

The annual subscription to the Usenet News Service from WiscNet was renewed.

Expenditures: $1,200

        GENERAL ACCESS COMPUTER LAB UPGRADES:

Student Technology Fee funds were used for several hardware and software upgrades to the General Access computer labs, including: 37 new computers (31 Compaq PCs and 6 Macintosh G4s) to replace older machines in the Polk Lab; licensing of new software applications for the GCA labs, including Borland C++ Builder Pro, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Appleworks 6.0, GS View, and AFS-Linux; upgrading the RAM for 70 computers in the Clow Lab from 32MB to 64MB; upgrading the memory in all GCA Macintosh computers; upgrading all GCA Macintosh computers to the Prosoft Novell client; acquiring monitoring software for the GCA Macintosh computers; and purchasing a new Macintosh server to serve Macintosh software applications to users in the GCA labs.

Expenditures: $107,000

REPLACEMENT OF OBSOLETE WORKSTATIONS IN POLK LIBRARY:

Student Technology Fee funds were used to replace obsolete computers in Polk Library's Reference Room with new Pentium III computers. These computers are used by students to access library and web electronic resources.

Expenditures: $10,000

SPECIALIZED COMPUTING AND TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS:

Student Technology Funds were used to purchase one computer kiosk in Blackhawk Commons for students to check e-mail; hardware and software for the Instructional Resources Center's Presentations Lab, allowing the Lab to offer digital video processing, web site development, graphics and animation production, specialized printing, CD-ROM production, and other services to students; a scanner and fax machine for the Oshkosh Student Association and OSA Legal Services Office; an upgrade to the OSA laptop computer (purchased two years ago with Student Technology Fee funds); and internal zip drives for two computers in the Campus Connection Student Involvement Center.

Expenditures: $16,700

CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR LASER PRINTING IN THE GENERAL ACCESS COMPUTER LABS:

Student Technology Fee funds were used to continue support for laser printing in the General Access computer labs. Funds provided a support budget per printer for paper, toner cartridges, and maintenance.

Expenditures: $40,000

CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR "NO FEE" LIBRARY PRINTING:

Student Technology Fee funds were provided Polk Library to continue "no fee" laser printing for students in the Library Reference area for students using electronic information resources. In addition, funding was provided to purchase one replacement laser printer

Expenditures: $19,000

IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:

Student Technology Fee funds were used to purchase specialized software (screen reading software, screen magnification software, and software for students with various learning disabilities). In addition, a new Macintosh computer was purchased for the Disabled Students Study Lounge for students with disabilities who use Macintosh technology.

Expenditures: $5,200

        STUDENT SOFTWARE APPLICATION SERVER:

Student Technology Fee funds were used to purchase a new high-performance server to deliver PC software applications to the General Access computer labs. This server ensures that current lab software is available to students.

Expenditures: $25,500

UPGRADE NETWORK BANDWIDTH IN GENERAL ACCESS COMPUTER LABS:

Student Technology Fee funds were used to purchase two 10/100 MBps Catalyst 4000 switches for the Radford and Clow general access computer labs. These switches will provide dedicated connections to each lab workstations (there are more than 200 workstations in the combined labs). These dedicated connections will both increase bandwidth and isolate each lab workstation from heavy traffic to other workstations.

Expenditures: $47,400

The figures provided in this Report are rounded up to the nearest hundred dollars.
