This report describes uses of the
1997-98 Student Technology Fee at UW Oshkosh. Several of the
projects detailed below, specifically the continuation of
Radford as a 24-hour lab and computer lab staffing support,
were approved in earlier years and continue as permanent
projects. All remaining expenditures were approved after
review and recommendations from the 1997-98 Student
Technology Fee Committee.
ADDITIONAL STUDENT
COMPUTER/SOFTWARE/NETWORK/LAB SUPPORT AND
MAINTENANCE:
- Two full-time positions, a PC
technician and a PC/LAN technician, continued in 1997-98.
A third full-time position, a Lab Manager, was hired in
January 1998. These positions collectively substantially
increase the staff assistance available to support
student computing needs. All three positions will
continue to be funded from the Student Technology Fee in
subsequent years.

CONTINUED INCREASED
STUDENT COMPUTER LAB ACCESS AND ASSISTANCE:
- The Radford Computer Lab, the
University's largest general access computer lab with 130
workstations, continued as a 24-hour lab during 1997-98.
Student Technology Fee funds were used to hire student
lab assistants for the Lab's extended hours and to
provide a second lab consultant during "peak hours"
during the Spring. In addition, the Student Technology
Fee was used for student lab consultants in the Polk
Computer Lab (funded by the Technology Fee in 1996-97).
The Student Technology Fee also paid for annual
maintenance on the security devices installed on the
exterior building door and lab door; these devices allow
the Lab to be open while the rest of the building is
closed.

SOFTWARE SITE
LICENSES:
- The site license for Trumpet
Winsocket was renewed for 1997-98. Site licenses for
Waterloo Maple, a mathematics software system (replacing
an earlier site license for Mathematica) and SPSS were
obtained.

USENET NEWS
SERVICE:
- Student Technology Funds were used
for the annual subscription to the Usenet News Service
from WiscNet.

- Expenditures: $1,200
GENERAL ACCESS
COMPUTER LAB UPGRADES:
- Student Technology Funds were used
for a variety of upgrades to the general access computer
labs, including: replacing 486 computers with Pentium
II's in the Clow and Swart general access labs; upgraded
software for general access computer labs; network
software upgrade for the general access labs; Norton
anti-virus site license for the general access labs; and
replacement printers.

- Expenditures: $152,400
RESIDENCE HALL
COMPUTER LAB UPGRADES:
- Student Technology Funds were used
for a variety of upgrades to the Residence Hall computer
labs, including: replacing 486 computers with Pentium
II's, upgraded software for the Residence Hall labs, and
network software upgrade for the Residence Hall
labs.

- Expenditures: $65,000
SPECIALIZED
COMPUTING RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS:
- Student Technology Funds were used
to purchase a computer, printer, scanner, and software
for the Campus Connections office, an office used by
multiple student organizations.

- Expenditures: $6,800
E-MAIL
KIOSKS:
- Student Technology Funds were used
to fund kiosks in the Student Memorial Union. Students
can check for e-mail at these kiosks.

- Expenditures: $12,000
