Student Technology Fee 1995-96

This report provides information on expenditures from the 1995-96 Student Technology Fee at UW Oshkosh.

The expenditures detailed below were finalized following consultation with a Student Technology Fee Committee established by the Oshkosh Student Association. In April 1996 a UW Oshkosh Student Technology Fee Policy and Procedures was adopted. This document codified the process followed in 1995-96 and will be followed for expenditure decisions from the 1996-97 Student Technology Fee.

ADDITIONAL STUDENT COMPUTER/SOFTWARE/NETWORK SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCE:

A technician was hired on a Project Appointment to support general access computer installation and maintenance, software installation, and computer and network support and maintenance. This position doubled the amount of staff assistance available to support student computing needs.

Expenditures: $24,303

INCREASED STUDENT COMPUTER LAB ACCESS AND ASSISTANCE:

The Radford Hall Computer Lab, the University's newest and largest General Access Computer lab with 130 computers (housing both an open lab with 70 Pentium and 30 Macintosh workstations and a teaching lab with 30 Pentiums) became a 24-hour lab at the start of the Spring 1996 semester. Student Technology Fee funds were used to hire student lab assistants for the expanded hours for the Radford Lab (the lab is staffed at all hours). In addition, a second student lab consultant was provided for "peak hours" during both the Fall and Spring semesters.
Converting the Radford Hall lab to a 24-hour lab required security devices to be installed on an exterior building door and the door to the lab itself. These security devices were funded using the Student Technology Fee.

Expenditures: $20,283 ($11,374 for lab consultants and $8,909 for security readers)

ADDITIONAL STUDENT COMPUTER LAB MANAGEMENT:

The University currently employs a half-time Computer Lab Manager (LTE) and student assistants to manage the General Access labs. Using the Technology Fee, additional student assistants were assigned to the Lab Manager.

Expenditures: $2,920

NEW AND UPGRADED SOFTWARE FOR STUDENT COMPUTER LABS:

Additional software was purchased and installed in the General Access Computer labs: 150 copies of MS Office Professional, 40 copies of Claris Works for Windows, 65 copies of Macintosh System 7.5, 90 copies of Claris Works for the Mac, 60 Copies of MS Office for the Mac, and 40 copies of HyperCard. Five general access computer lab servers were upgraded using the Student Technology Fee. This allow students in any one of these labs to access software from the other lab servers:

Expenditures: $1,380

Student Technology Fee funds were used to purchase and install 22 new PowerMac computers in the Swart Teaching Lab. These replaced obsolete Macintosh S/E computers.

HARDWARE/NETWORK ENHANCEMENTS TO SUPPORT INCREASED STUDENT E-MAIL AND INTERNET ACCESS:

At the start of the Fall semester, all students were issued e-mail accounts on the University's VAX computer.
