This report provides information on
expenditures from the 1995-96 Student Technology Fee at UW
Oshkosh.
The expenditures detailed below were
finalized following consultation with a Student Technology
Fee Committee established by the Oshkosh Student
Association. In April 1996 a UW Oshkosh Student Technology
Fee Policy and Procedures was adopted. This document
codified the process followed in 1995-96 and will be
followed for expenditure decisions from the 1996-97 Student
Technology Fee.
ADDITIONAL STUDENT
COMPUTER/SOFTWARE/NETWORK SUPPORT AND
MAINTENANCE:
- A technician was hired on a
Project Appointment to support general access computer
installation and maintenance, software installation, and
computer and network support and maintenance. This
position doubled the amount of staff assistance available
to support student computing needs.

- Expenditures: $24,303
INCREASED STUDENT
COMPUTER LAB ACCESS AND ASSISTANCE:
- The Radford Hall Computer Lab, the
University's newest and largest General Access Computer
lab with 130 computers (housing both an open lab with 70
Pentium and 30 Macintosh workstations and a teaching lab
with 30 Pentiums) became a 24-hour lab at the start of
the Spring 1996 semester. Student Technology Fee funds
were used to hire student lab assistants for the expanded
hours for the Radford Lab (the lab is staffed at all
hours). In addition, a second student lab consultant was
provided for "peak hours" during both the Fall and Spring
semesters.
- Converting the Radford Hall lab to
a 24-hour lab required security devices to be installed
on an exterior building door and the door to the lab
itself. These security devices were funded using the
Student Technology Fee.

- Expenditures: $20,283 ($11,374 for
lab consultants and $8,909 for security
readers)
ADDITIONAL STUDENT
COMPUTER LAB MANAGEMENT:
- The University currently employs a
half-time Computer Lab Manager (LTE) and student
assistants to manage the General Access labs. Using the
Technology Fee, additional student assistants were
assigned to the Lab Manager.

NEW AND UPGRADED
SOFTWARE FOR STUDENT COMPUTER LABS:
- Additional software was purchased
and installed in the General Access Computer labs: 150
copies of MS Office Professional, 40 copies of Claris
Works for Windows, 65 copies of Macintosh System 7.5, 90
copies of Claris Works for the Mac, 60 Copies of MS
Office for the Mac, and 40 copies of HyperCard. Site
licenses for Mathematica and Trumpet Winsock were also
obtained:

UPGRADES TO STUDENT
COMPUTER LAB SERVERS:
- Five general access computer lab
servers were upgraded using the Student Technology Fee.
This allow students in any one of these labs to access
software from the other lab servers:

UPGRADE STUDENT
COMPUTERS:
- Student Technology Fee funds were
used to purchase and install 22 new PowerMac computers in
the Swart Teaching Lab. These replaced obsolete Macintosh
S/E computers.

USENET NEWS
SERVICE:
- At the request of students, a
subscription to the Usenet News Service from WiscNet was
obtained for the period April-June 1996. The Usenet
subscription will continue in 1996-97.

HARDWARE/NETWORK
ENHANCEMENTS TO SUPPORT INCREASED STUDENT E-MAIL AND
INTERNET ACCESS:
- At the start of the Fall semester,
all students were issued e-mail accounts on the
University's VAX computer. In addition, students received
expanded Internet/World Wide Web access from student
computer labs. In order to accommodate increased student
e-mail and Internet traffic, upgrades were installed to
the VAX computer (e-mail) and SUN workstations (Web).
Eleven additional modems were purchased to accommodate
increased network access from off-campus students. These
upgrades were funded from the Technology Fee.

ADDITIONAL PRINTERS
FOR STUDENT COMPUTER LABS:
- Five additional high-speed
printers were purchased for the Clow, Radford, Swart, and
Halsey computer labs. Two additional low-speed dot-matrix
printers were purchased for the Nursing/Education
computer lab.
