• Center for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV)
  St. Andrews University has one of the premier terrorism studies programs in the world. Prof. Alex Schmid is the current director and co-editor of the journal Terrorism and political Violence.
  

• The Jamestown Foundation
  The Jamestown Foundation has a broad range of programs and publications. The site offers streaming video of recent lectures from a wide range of scholars, diplomats, and military intelligence professionals.
• The National Security Archive
  The National Security Archive is a goldmine for researchers of government documents and historical records, many of which were declassified through FOIA requests.
• The Federation of American Scientists
  This page links to important documents and research reports in a number of terrorism related fields under the headlings of 'Strategic Security' and 'Information Technology for Learning and Research'. It is highly recommended for research in technical and military issues.
  
• Terrorism Data Bases and Research Centers
  The MIPT (Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism) database is one of the most comprehensive on-line resources available for general information on terrorism issues.
• The Center for Defense Information
  A good source for reports, news and opinion pieces on a remarkable range of issues dealing with terrorism and armed conflict.
• The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
  A wonderful source of up to date, downloadable reports on a wide variety of terrorism related subjects, as well as area and focus reports, by a number of renowned experts in the field. Highly recommended.
• The International Crisis Group
  A very well funded scholarly and journalistic effort to draw attention to global issues and trouble spots in real time. Excellent source of short reports with a regional, area studies and issue oriented focus.
• The Brookings Institute
  A liberal think tank which offers valuable reports and information on terrorism and other issues of global concern.
• The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI)
  Collects and translates clips from Middle Eastern television and news sources. The perspective is Israeli but the clips are priceless.
• The Terrorism Research Center
  An independent organization with a variety of documents and reports available.
• The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) h
  Has a number of resources focused on terrorism research http://www.iiss.org/. It also includes the Armed Conflict Database has public and subscription only information on global armed conflicts, including terrorism. The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is a subscriber and its students and faculty can access this information through the Polk Library page .
• The Rand Corporation
  Has a number of outstanding studies available for download, including important work on global terrorism.

US Government Sites

• The Strategic Studies Institute of the US Army War College
  This site offers authorative monographic studies of terrorism and Iraq related issues. The studies are available free and can be downloaded directly from the site.
• The Defend America site
  Is a United States Department of Defense Page to disseminate the DoD’s spin on the news emanating from the War on Terror. The page links the homepages of all of the Armed Services as well as government agencies engaged in the War on Terror.

News and Opinion Maker Sites

• PBS’s Frontline series can be viewed by streaming video .
  Relevent topics are from 2006; “The Return of the Taliban,” “The Lost Year in Iraq,” and “The Dark Side.”
• The Project for the New American Century
  A neo-conservative think tank that many believe laid the intellectual basis for the Iraq War. It is an interesting source of opinion and highly ideological reports.
• September 11 news.Com
  T he best available site for information on the 9/11 attacks, including a databvase of all known Osama bin-Laden speeches and communiqués since September 11, 2001.
• Al-Jazeera
  T he first independent news source to emerge in the Arabic speaking world. It now has an English language news channel which can be accessed by subscription from its news site.
• Campus Watch
  Bills itself as “Monitoring Middle East Studies on Campus.” The creation of Daniel Pipes, it originally offered a list of professors it believed held an anti-Israel bias teaching at US universities. It had a link inviting students to report their professors for inclusion on the list. After being compared with McCarthyism and apparently flooded with professors wishing to have their name listed, Campus Watch discontinued the service. It remains useful for sound files and a muted but still somewhat lively debate on the way information on the Middle East is presented in American universities. It was better with the list, frankly.
• The Revolutionary Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)
  Is a remarkable resource. It focuses on women in Afghanistan and was made famous for its resistance to Taliban rule. RAWA was a US favorite until its page began to run galleries of children killed and injured in US bombings right next to galleries of Taliban atrocities. It remains a great source for news and multi-media files on life in Afghanistan.

Human Rights

• Amnesty International
  needs no explanations.
• Human Rights Watch
  Less stridently ideological than Amnesty International, and it offers first rate research reports on global issues.
• Gendercide Watch
  Edited by Adam Jones. It provides interesting information on gender and sexual orientation in genocide and violence issues.

Iraqi Sunni Insurgency Sites

• Al-Basrah.net
  A site focused on the city of al-Basrah in Iraq. It provides news and commentary in English and Arabic, as well as documents and combat videos. It includes reports in English of the Iraqi (Sunni) Resistance from around Iraq, and a propaganda section aimed at American soldiers called “GI Special”.
• Uruk.net
  Another Sunni resistance site in English. It contains primarily short communiqués and news flashes.
