International Studies Program

Basic Requirements

Like all University students, International Studies majors must meet General Education requirements, and the requirements for either the BA or BS degree. International Studies graduates may receive EITHER the BA or BS degree under the College of Letters and Science.

Apart from the general requirements, every International Studies Major (regardless of emphasis), is composed of the following components:

International Studies Major - 36 Credits

Required Courses

59-205 Contemporary International Issues 3 Cr.
59-402 Seminar in International Studies 3 Cr.

(Students in the University Honors Program may receive honors credit for 59-402. Many other IS courses give honors credit, please check the courses that give honors credit)

Individual Specialization (Emphasis)

15 Credit specialization either in a single discipline, a geographic area, or around a topical theme within the major.

15 Cr.
A maximum of 9 credits of Introductory Level Courses from participating departments may be counted toward the major. 0-9 cr.

Electives (From a list of courses giving credit in the International Studies Major at the 300 level). Students may choose from course list 2 (Discipline emphases), or course list 3 (Regional studies emphases)

6-15 cr.
TOTAL

The following are recommended to fulfill the prerequisites for upper level course work in the chosen area of study:

84-115 OR 84-101 International Politics or Introduction to Government
50-102 World Regional Geography
57-102 Modern Civilization
