Requirements (Degree/Experience):

Bachelor's degree with significant related experience. Advising or counseling experience within education. Supervisory experience. Demonstrated leadership within academic advising and/or higher education. Exceptional organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Competency in Windows-based computer environment. Ability to work effectively with college students, faculty and administrators. Ability to work independently and with supervision. Ability to work well in a changing work environment with new responsibilities, including new technology. Commitment to delivery of high quality academic advising.

Responsibilities:

General: The Assistant Director provides expert academic advising to undergraduate students in the Undergraduate Advising Resource Center (UARC). In addition, the Assistant Director has primary responsiblity for a programmatic area, supervises the advising team in his/her area, facilitates advising relationships and serves as a conduit of academic information between the College of Letters & Science and the UARC.

Specific: Collaborate with the Director of Academic Advising and the advising staff in developing, implementing and improving administrative processes as necessary for successul advising and developmental advising initiatives. Provide supervision and participate in annual evaluation process. Work with advisors in developing, implementing, and improving processes necessary for successful advising. Provide expert, credible, and sensitive advising to students. Advise students regarding selecting a major and courses, career objectives and personal goals; make appropriate referrals. Communicate and interpret University policies. Opportunity to teach career/academic exploration class. Provide leadership for implementation of technology into advising processes. Coordinate communication between Letters & Science faculty and advisors; serve as a resource for faculty advisors.

Preferences:

Master's Degree in higher education or related field. With a Bachelor's degree, seven or more years of related experience. Knowledge of student development theory. Presentation, teaching or training experience. Familiarity with academic policies and procedures in higher education. Familiarity with use of technology to support student services.

Terms of Appointment:

Continuing 12-month Academic Staff position.
