Elective Requirements

Honors Electives are Honors versions of general education courses. These classes are often smaller than non-Honors courses, are limited solely to Honors students, and provide greater academic engagement in a supportive environment.

The number of Honors electives required depends on when a student is admitted to the UHP.

  • Students who join the UHP as freshmen are required to complete four Honors electives.
  • Students who begin the UHP after their freshman year are typically required to complete three Honors electives.
  • Transfer students with 45 credits or more who qualify for the UHP's Transfer Student Pathway are required to complete only one elective.

Students are welcome to take additional Honors Electives and are not limited to the number required. Regular meetings with the Associate Advisor are encouraged to determine how these elective requirements can fit efficiently into each student's plans.

 

Honors Contract Courses

An Honors Contract Course serves as an upper-level (300- or 400-level of 3 credits or more) alternative when a student has no remaining Honors elective options. A Contract Course must be in a student's major or minor and involves adding an Honors dimension into the standard workload. Students may be required to write an extra paper, extend several assignments, or create a relevant project and are expected to present their work or findings to the class. The instructor determines the parameters of the Honors-level work in conjunction with the UHP Director and the student.

Students interested in completing an Honors Contract Course should first consult with the Associate Advisor after considering which class they might like to convert. After receiving preliminary approval, the student should then approach the instructor to see whether he or she would be willing to undertake the project and discuss some potential options.

Contracts can be approved prior to the start date of a course but must be approved by the end of the third week of the semester in which the course will be completed. Final approval of the Honors Contract is at the discretion of the Director. Upon completion of the work at the end of the term, the course will be counted as an Honors elective and be noted on the student's transcript.

 

*** Note: Students may not complete more than two Honors Contract Courses in order to satisfy their Honors Elective requirements unless they have received special permission from the Director. Students concerned about this are encouraged to contact the Associate Advisor as soon as possible to discuss their options.
