This fall, Pizza with Professors (PWP) organizers have invited Dr. Heike Alberts, Professor of Geography and HNRS 175 instructor. Stop by Oviatt House on Wednesday, October 21, at 4:00 for pizza, fellowship, and interesting conversation. It's free and there is no test; PWP is a fun and informative Honors tradition, so just bring along your questions and your appetite :) Some topics that may be discussed include Dr. Alberts's diverse courses ("Food," "People, Places, and Culture," "Urban Geography," and more); her homeland of Germany; and why Dr. Alberts says "Teaching is the best job in the world!"
The Department of English is pleased to announce that Carolyn L. Karcher, Professor Emerita at Temple University. Karcher will give a public talk, "An Inspiring Alliance in a Dark Time: Albion W. Tourgee, Ida B. Wells, Harry C. Smith, and the Campaign Against Lynching," on Wednesday evening, October 14, at 7:00 in Reeve 306. A prolific author and leading scholar, Karcher will acquaint us with an especially complicated and destructive era--Reconstruction after the American Civil War--and will introduce Tourgee, Wells, and Smith, whose courage and vision transcended their time and circumstances. The University Honors Student Association is sponsoring a get-together on Wednesday, September 23, at 4:30 in the Scott Hall Main Lounge. Plans and ideas for the coming year will be shared as well as valuable advice for new students. It's also, we hope, a fine time to take a break! Please join us for the 13th Annual Honors Convocation on Wednesday, September 16, at 5:00 in Pollock House! Each fall as we begin a new academic year, the Convocation is our back-to-school gathering where Honors news, plans, and opportunities are announced. We also hear from a keynote speaker. This year, we are honored to welcome DR. NORLISHA CRAWFORD (Associate Professor of English and Director of the African American Studies Program), who will present "Meditations on the Nexus of Race, Identity, and Courage in the U.S. in the 21st Century." UHSA Executive Board Member Dana Giannelli presented Dr. Robert Feldman with the UHP's Outstanding Teaching Award at the Spring 2015 Honors Graduation Ceremony on Monday, May 11. Dr. Feldman was nominated for ENGLISH 228: Honors Modern American Literature, a class he has taught since 1999.
Fifteen students will present their research methods and findings on a wide range of fascinating topics--from analyzing skeletal remains to evaluating the fine art of painting to examining eyewitness testimonies. Whether you're considering tackling an Honors Thesis, are simply interested in the subject matter, or just want to support the students' year-long efforts, please join us for a session--one or all:
