Welcome

A Welcome from the Director

Carlin_Larry_.jpgWelcome to the website of the University Honors Program (UHP) at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Here you will find information about the Program, and the many opportunities it affords our highly motivated students.

The student-faculty relationship is at the center of our mission. The UHP fosters a community in which high-achieving students can experience the best educational practices: small discussion-based classes, unique team-taught classes, a low student-faculty ratio, opportunities for collaborative research, numerous co-curricular opportunities, and much more.  Our graduates are routinely hired by employers or accepted by the professional and graduate programs of their choice.

It is important to note that the UHP is not an AP program of the sort one finds in high schools. The emphasis is not on assigning extra work or extra classes needed for graduation, but is on providing special opportunities for our high-achieving students.

I invite you to navigate our website and see the many ways in which we carry out our dedication to student success.  I invite you also to come visit the Program at the heart of campus in the Oviatt House.  If you have any questions about the website, or about the Program, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Pizza with Professors Series Continues Next Tuesday: Dr. Erin Winterrowd

Pizza with Professors Series Continues Next Tuesday: Dr. Erin Winterrowd

by Russo, Julie A. last modified Apr 05, 2016 01:32 PM

The University Honors Student Association has invited Dr. Erin Winterrowd as the next guest for Pizza with Professors, a longstanding UHP tradition. Dr. Winterrowd, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology since 2007, has also contributed significantly to the UHP both as an HNRS 175 instructor and as an Honors Thesis advisor (more times than anyone on the Honors staff can count!). Winterrowd's varied research interests include gender and cultural influences on human behavior (with particular attention to issues of suicide), under-represented groups in science and engineering, and mental health services within the University of Wisconsin System. Please join us for another stimulating Pizza with Professors event! We'll get started--and the pizza will be ready too--at 4:30. We hope to see you and your friends on Tuesday, April 12!

A Lot to Bear: Thanks for a Successful Drive!

by Russo, Julie A. last modified Apr 19, 2016 04:11 PM

There were a TON of stuffed animals. Seriously, those collection boxes were heavy! The University Honors Student Association (UHSA), the Pre-Med Society, and the American Red Cross joined forces to collect new teddy bears and other stuffed animal friends. The toys were donated to Mercy Medical Center, where they will be at the ready to offer comfort to children undergoing medical care. Your gift will no doubt make any hospital stay more bear-able!

Honors Alum Tracy Wilichowski to Give Talk Today, February 16

Honors Alum Tracy Wilichowski to Give Talk Today, February 16

by Russo, Julie A. last modified Feb 16, 2016 12:16 PM

We are happy to announce that Honors alum and Rotary scholar Tracy Wilichowski will be on campus to visit with the University Honors Program community and friends on Tuesday, February 16, in Dempsey 314 at 5:00. After she graduated from UW Oshkosh in 2012 with a BS in History, a BS in Philosophy, and a minor in Social Justice, Tracy moved to sunny Miami for a two-year stint as an instructor for Teach for America. While there, she applied for and was awarded a Rotary Global Grant scholarship that funded her master’s in development management at The London School of Economics and Political Science. Tracy recently returned to Wisconsin from London, where she attended graduate school since fall 2014. We are excited that she accepted our invitation to present on her postgraduate years as well as her master’s program, internships, and future plans. She will also discuss her experiences with HNRS 275: Culture Connection students in her adopted city. Currently, Tracy is researching job opportunities. “I am looking for work,” she says, “that will enhance my knowledge of successful grassroots economic policies. I hope to develop new strategies to improve standards of living for individuals and am most interested in international development consulting.” Her long-term goal is to conduct research and help develop policy that will drive change in how international aid is distributed. Tracy is also busy with speaking engagements at which she promotes and recommends Rotary grants, so others are aware of the opportunity to study all over the world. She is living proof that such experiences are indeed possible. Please join us for refreshments and an exhilarating talk this afternoon!
