The much anticipated 2009 European Odyssey finally began to become a reality when we escaped the frigid temperatures of Wisconsin for the milder climes of Amsterdam. After a smooth, but short night flight, we arrived safely at our first Port of Call. After a day of settling in at the StayOK Hostel, we all agreed agreed that it was, indeed, OK... great location, helpful staff, good food, a spacious classroom and a welcoming city all added up to equal a very promising 2009 EO "kick off." Dr. Alberts joined us and quickly submerged us all in the unique surroundings of "watery" Amsterdam...a great location to begin the first Odyssey course, European Geography. With the cooperation of the weather, an interesting walking city awaited our many treks. Interesting lectures explored topics unique to the Netherlands and Amsterdam and class visits and activities augmented and deepened our understanding of the precarious compromises of the "low country." throughout its history. Visits were made to the Coster Diamond Company, the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank Haus. Considerable additional exploration was made on foot ("search and discover") and by canal boat. A special visit was made to a restored 17th century village, Zaanse Schans, complete with an inside tour of a historic, working windmill (one of many on the site) that was grinding pigment for paint ("Old Dutch Boy"?). Amsterdam, with its many friendly, English speaking inhabitants was a good transition into authentic European culture, as the pictures below reveal. |
