European Odyssey

2010

Program Description

(Most recent update:(5/17/10)

Program Introduction

Overview:

The 2010 European Odyssey study abroad program will provide 12 students the opportunity to spend an entire semester residing in Europe while progressing through five areas of academic study. Each class, taught by UW Oshkosh professors, is a balanced blend of classroom and on site lectures, discussions, site visitations, written assignments and exams. On occasional free days or weekends, students will be able to explore their environments on their own. The spring 2010 program is currently offering mini-residencies in Rome, Florence, London, Paris and Berlin. From 1 to 2 weeks each, these "short stays" will allow students time to "settle in" and savor the sights and sounds of their various settings. Numerous day trips to selected locations and sites are planned to augment and enhance the program's academic emphasis. A "Spring Break" is being offer to students in Edinburgh, Scotland between our London and Paris residencies. All travel and accommodations will be arranged for those wishing to spend their spring break week in Edinburgh.

The Program Course Schedule:

Our 2010 European Odyssey academic schedule consists of five courses, taught one at a time in short term formats 2 weeks each). Students will earn a total of 15-16 academic credits during their participation in the 2010 European Odyssey program.

Program Narrative:

Students currently participating in the spring 2010 European Odyssey program will begin their journey of learning and discovery in mid March by travelling to Rome, Italy, where they will commence their study of "Culture and Values" taught by Professor John Minniear.

Upon our arrival in Florence, Italy, Professor Jeanie Grant Moore will join the Odyssey Program to begin teaching Medieval and Early British Literature in Florence and London starting with its Italian Renaissance roots.before moving on to London for another week of study.

During the second week in London, students will begin their next course, Encountering the Arts taugth by Professor John Minniear. The week-long "Spring Break" follows which will allow students to travel as a group to Edinburgh, Scotland, where travel and and accommodations will be arranged for them. The fees for the "Spring Break" are in addition to the Odyssey program fee. If students choose, they may travel during that week to places of their choice, again, at their own expense.

The Odyssey will then regroup in Paris for the conclusion of the course Encountering the Arts during the first week. The second week in Paris is the setting for the beginning of Professor Heike Alberts' course European Geography. The following week, we will travel to Berlin, Germany for the conclusion of European Geography. For the final two weeks of the Odyssey Program, Professor Monika Deegen will join the Odyssey program in Berlin for an intensive, two-week interdisciplinary course entitled "Modern Germany: From Division to Reunification." Visits to numerous sites are planned which will include a day each in nearby Potsdam as well as one to the historical cities of Leipzig and Wittenberg.
