The International Studies Honor Society

International Studies is a specialized field which has its own honor society: Sigma Iota Rho

Sigma Iota Rho was founded in 1985, and the International Studies Program at UW Oshkosh is proud to be among the founders.

UW Oshkosh hosts Gamma Chapter, that is, the third chapter of Sigma Iota Rho created.

The first two chapters were founded at major graduate institutions, from which our graduates have graduated.

The fact that UW Oshkosh was involved in establishing Sigma Iota Rho indicates the national standing of the International Studies Program at UW Oshkosh.

At the present time there are approximately 60 chapters of Sigma Iota Rho at universities throughout the United States.

Gamma Chapter holds an annual induction dinner at which time students who meet the Qualifications for membership in Sigma Iota Rho are inducted.


The Naming of Sigma Iota Rho


The name of the honor society was carefully chosen to reflect characteristics which are realistically necessary for any nation to conduct a successful foreign policy.

Sigma stands for synesi, which stands for prudence.

Iota stands for ideosi, which stands for ideals.

Rho stands for romi, which stands for power.

These three qualities are essential for the conduct of successful foreign policy.

Qualifications for membership


The qualifications for undergraduate membership are:

Junior standing

Completion of 18 credits in courses giving credit in International Studies

  • At least 9 of these credits must be in upper division courses.
A cumulative grade point average overall of 3.20 or above

A grade point average in courses giving credit in International Studies of 3.30 or above

Demonstrated competence in a foreign language, measured by completion of the BA requirement (2 years) of courses in a foreign language
