Building Name Announced

We have used the naming policy of UW Oshkosh and UW System to arrive at a decision regarding the naming of our new academic building. After receiving extensive advice and feedback from governance group leaders and administrators on the U-PLAN Council and the deans of the College of Business and the College of Letters and Science, the decision has been made to name the new academic building Sage Hall.

The Meaning Behind Sage

The word “sage” has multiple meanings that lend themselves to an academic building that is energy efficient, including:

  • a mentor in spiritual and philosophical topics who is renowned for profound wisdom;

  • having wisdom that comes with age and experience;

  • aromatic fresh or dried gray-green leaves used widely as seasoning;

  • any of various plants of the genus Salvia; a cosmopolitan herb.

The word “sage” also is associated with Socrates and the Socratic Method of inquiry, and it aligns well with the “Nature of Wisdom” and “Wisdom of Nature” phrases imprinted in the decorative cast stone panels located on the building’s exterior.
