PRE-VETERINARY MEDICINE

Veterinarians work in small and/or large animal practices, public health agencies, research settings, and a variety of other positions. While two years of pre-veterinary study are the absolute minimum, some veterinary medical colleges give priority to applicants if they are a candidate for the baccalaureate degree.

Is this the right career for you?  Contact the UWO Counseling Center for personal guidance and recommendations, understanding that the person you are as a college freshman is not the person you'll be upon entrance to veterinary school.

Acceptance into one of the 27 veterinary medical schools in the United States is extremely competitive. The student will need very high grades and should score well on the admission test required by the school. Veterinary medical schools require four years of professional training in order to receive the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (D.V.M.)

In Wisconsin, the veterinary medical school is located at the University of Wisconsin Madison.  Click on Education and then Admissions; you can also apply online from this web site.

A UW Oshkosh alum in vet school in Minnesota writes: "I was very happy with the biology education offered at Oshkosh. Everyone complained that I did not go to Madison for undergrad - but I know I had a much better education at Oshkosh - just because of the smaller classes and greater opportunities offered for experiences and getting to know professors.  I will definitely keep in touch over my veterinary school career. Also, I wanted to offer that if there are any of your students who are pre-vet and have any questions about vet school/application process - I would be happy to answer them. I know how challenging it is to get in - and I would be more than willing to help any pre-vet student any way I can (so they do not make some of the mistakes I did!). Feel free to give them this e-mail address".  Email Sarah at maasc002@umn.edu.
