RESEARCH &
DEVELOPMENT…

Searching today
for tomorrow’s treatments
R&D occurs in university and industry laboratory settings. Either way, new ideas for future treatments are developed using techniques such as biochemistry, molecular biology, cell culture, and animal models.
Those with Bachelor's degrees are sought for entry-level positions generally involving a lot of hands-on bench work. UW Oshkosh alumni have gone on to rewarding in-state careers in healthcare R&D with companies such as Covance and at research universities such as the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Those with Master's or Doctoral (PhD) degrees are sought as group leaders and chief scientists who direct research teams.
The faculty at UW Oshkosh include teacher-scholars engaged in life science research that meaningfully involves undergraduates. Undergraduates who obtain research experience not only gain a "tool box" of mastered techniques, but also a mind trained to think like a scientist, with honed critical thinking skills. Often the undergraduate research experience culminates in a presentation at a regional, national, or international meeting with other professional scientists. Just walk the halls of the Halsey Science Center any day of the week to see the poster presentations of our freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors!
The rewards of healthcare R&D are not as immediately patient-oriented, since it's a long road between bench and bed-side. However, for some students, R&D is the perfect way to contribute to the long-term health of society.
