Do I need an appointment to see a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

Appointments are preferred but walk-in hours are available during the two academic semesters from 9am to 4pm. There may be long waits when requesting to be seen during walk-in clinic. Acutely ill or injured patients are always given priority.

Appointments are required for physicals, gynecological exams, STD testing, psychiatric care, patient assistance for medications, and travel health. You are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete paperwork. You may request to be seen by a provider of your choice.

What does it cost to use the Student Health Center?

There is no charge for most office visits. There are nominal charges for medical supplies, procedures, lab tests and medications. See our current fee schedule.

How do I pay for services?

You can pay for services at the time of care with cash, check, Titan Card. Your other option is to have your charges applied to your student account. These charges are then rolled into your current UW Oshkosh account balance. The Billing Office will include the charges in your next billing statement and it will be sent to you, at your home address. The only thing that you will see on your bill is "Student Health Center charges" and the date of service. You can pay your bill during regular business hours at the Cashiers window on the second floor in Dempsy Hall.

Will you bill my insurance for my services at the Student Health Center?

No, the Student Health Center does not bill insurance, other than the Family Planning Waiver. If requested, we will give you a copy of your receipt, with the proper information to enable you to submit your charges to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

It is important for you to carry a copy of your health insurance card. Many insurance plans will only cover the cost of care at specific hospitals/clinics. If you require x-rays or specialty care, it is important for you to know where your care will be covered.

Can I get my prescription filled at the Student Health Center?

Most prescriptions can not be filled at the Student Health Center. We stock a very limited supply of pharmaceuticals which are generally ordered by one of our health care providers. In general, if you need to get prescriptions filled regularly, you need to make arrangements to have your prescription transferred to a pharmacy in Oshkosh.

What do I need to do to get the pill or other birth control?

Condoms are free at the Student Health Center and are available at the front desk or in exam rooms. The TitanWell booth also provides free condoms.

The Student Health Center dispenses a variety of birth control pills, NuvaRing (the Ring), OrthoEvra (the Patch), and Depo Provera (the Shot) at a low cost. These methods require a prescription, so you will need to make an appointment with a doctor or nurse practitioner. You will also need to fill out health forms (weblink) prior to your appointment. Please bring the completed forms with you to your gynecological exam. If necessary, you can get up to 3 months of birth control prior to having a gynecological exam by making an appointment with a nurse practitioner.

If you are already on a form of prescription birth control you can have your prescription transferred to the Student Health Center by having your clinic at home complete a "Birth Control Pill Request" Form. Please have your health care provider complete this form and return it to us by Fax (920-424-1769) or in person.

Information about Birth Control is available at:
Mayo Clinic Birth Control Information

Do I need a prescription for emergency contraception?

Plan B (Emergency Contraception) can prevent a pregnancy after birth control failure or unprotected sex. It is available for a reduced fee at the Student Health Center after a brief consultation. It is also available without a prescription from most pharmacies. You have to show evidence that you are age 17 or older to purchase it.

Women are encouraged to get Plan B in advance. The sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, the more effective it is at preventing pregnancy. For more information on emergency contraception, visit the Plan B website.

We encourage all students living in residence halls to be vaccinated with either Menomune or Menactra to prevent meningitis. We hold an annual Meningitis Vaccine Clinic every September in Reeve Union. There is a charge for the vaccine and you can pay by cash, check, TitanCard or put it on your student account. If you can't come to the clinic, please call and schedule an appointment to get your vaccine at the Health Center.

Do you provide flu (respiratory influenza) shots?

Yes, we encourage all students to receive an annual flu shot. The strain of circulating flu changes annually, therefore you need a new immunization every Fall. The flu is highly contagious and living in a community setting and/or attending large classes increase the chances that you will get the respiratory flu. Symptoms include high fever, sore throat, body aches and cough which can keep you out of class for several days.

We hold an annual Flu Clinic every Fall in Reeve Union. There is a charge for the vaccine and you can pay by cash, check, TitanCard or charge it to your student account. Vaccines are given on a first come, first serve basis and supplies are limited. Check our home page for dates / times / costs. If you can't come to the clinic, please call and schedule an appointment to get your vaccine at the Health Center.

For more information on flu, visit: www.cdc.gov/flu.
