Back Pain

Most back pain is acute, lasting from a few days to a few weeks. It is generally caused by muscle strain or muscle spasm. In addition, back pain may be caused by pinched nerves in the back or other neurological problems.

Self-Care

  • Take anti-inflammatory medicine such as ibuprofen
  • Avoid activities that aggravate the pain
  • Sleep on your side with your knees flexed
  • Start an exercise program to strengthen your back
  • Use proper lifting techniques
  • Seek medical care if the pain is persistent or severe
