University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Head Start

Health Services

UW Oshkosh Head Start provides a comprehensive health program.  Children and families are linked to an ongoing source of continuous, accessible health care.  All children are required to have a yearly medical and dental exam.  If families do not have a provider or funds for health care, the Health Manager and Family Support Specialist work with them to find these.  If no other funding is available to the family, Head Start may fund medical/dental exams.  The Health Services Manager and Health Assistant keep the Family Support Specialists informed of children needing updated medical or dental exams.

The health and safety of children is ensured through the establishment of effective health emergency procedures that are listed in the staff/parent handbook.  Each child has an emergency card at the center and on the bus.  CPR classes are required for center staff at regular intervals.  Written procedures for handling suspected or known child abuse are printed in the employee guidance which is given to every staff member and information is provided to parents in their parent handbook.

Universal precautions are reviewed annually with center staff and these procedures are observed with all contact with, and for any spills of, blood or body fluids.  Staff training is provided as necessary for specific health concerns.  Children with special health concerns may be main streamed and services provided as necessary to assist the child’s development.  Parent involvement is vital to this process.
