Finding Funding

So, you have an idea for a project and now you need to find the money to fund it. Where should you start?

The Office of Grants and Faculty Development can help guide you in the right direction. Stop in and see us to develop a sound strategy for finding the right funding source for your project.

We encourage you to investigate both internal funding opportunities through the Faculty Development Program and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning as well as external funding sources.

Databases for Finding Grants

Our office subscribes to three major external funding source databases—SPIN, GrantSearch and Community of Science.

SPIN

InfoEd's SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network) can be used for identifying grant programs including research grants, fellowships, publication support, sabbatical support and curriculum development from more than 6,000 government, private and non-profit funding sources worldwide. Program information is presented in a standard format that allows you to readily compare opportunities. In addition to using a keyword search for finding grants, you can also subscribe to automated alerts and be notified when new opportunities that match your interests are announced.

To access the SPIN database, visit http://infoedglobal.com/solutions/spin-global-suite/http://infoedglobal.com/solutions/spin-global-suite/.

To create an automated alert based on specific keywords or discipline, visit www.infoed.org and select GENIUS. You will then be prompted to enter some information about yourself and your affiliation with UW Oshkosh before you can specify criteria for your automated alert.

You can also access informational guides for the SPIN funding database with the following links:

GrantSearch

Part of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), GrantSearch is a database of more than 2,000 federal and private funding programs that focus on higher education.

GrantSearch can be accessed at www.aascu.org/grc. You will need to obtain the UW Oshkosh username and password for accessing this database from the Office of Grants and Faculty Development at (920) 424-3215 or grants@uwosh.edu

Pivot (Formerly known as COS)

Pivot is a global resource for hard-to-find information critical to scientific research and other projects across all disciplines. You can search for funding sources with their database of more than 25,000 funding record worth more than $33 billion; search among 500,000 profiles of researchers from 1,600 institutions to identify experts and collaborators; and promote your research with a Pivot profile.

To access Pivot resources, create your free profile from a computer on the UW Oshkosh network. You can then access your profile from any computer. Visit the PIVOT website at https://pivot.cos.com/login to get started.

In addition to these databases, there are a number of individual agencies that publicize their own grants such as grants.gov for federal grants, NASA, the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fulbright Scholars Program, among many others. Please contact us if you would like help focusing on a particular industry organization or private funder for your project.
