Center for Scholarly Teaching announces fall 2009 programming

The UW Oshkosh Center for Scholarly Teaching (CST) has a busy fall 2009 programming schedule, designed to support its vision to enhance student learning by inspiring and equipping the UW Oshkosh teaching community to achieve excellence that emanates from exceptional research. New programs include a six-session book club and several One-Session Wonders. The One-Session Wonders will be offered twice in the weeks in which they are scheduled. These one-hour or less faculty development opportunities are research-based sessions designed for abbreviated, yet practical, invigoration.
CST Book Dialogue
Facilitated by Alan Lareau (Foreign Languages).
Book: How Professors Think: Inside the Curious World of Academic Judgment (2009) by Michele Lamont.
Meeting Times: Tuesdays 1-2 p.m., on Sept. 22, Oct. 6, Oct. 20, Nov. 10, Nov. 24 and Dec. 8.

CST One-Session Wonders

Each session will be held twice during the week it is scheduled.
Meeting Times: Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 a.m. and Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: An Introduction, Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. Facilitated by Lori Carrell (Communication), CST director.
SOTL Starter Grant Questions, Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. Facilitated by David Jones (Public Affairs, Criminal Justice Program), Provost’s scholarly teaching leader. (Note: SOTL starter grant due date – Monday, Oct. 5, 5 p.m.)
Making Meaning with Metaphors: Classroom Creativity, Oct. 13 and Oct. 14. Facilitated by Karen King (Public Affairs, Public Administration Program), Provost’s scholarly teaching leader.
Adapting to On-Line Teaching and Learning, Nov. 10 and Nov. 11. Facilitated by Judy Lambert (Reading Education), Provost’s scholarly teaching leader.
Syllabus Scrutiny: Inspecting Your Syllabi Through a Best Practice Lens, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2. Facilitated by Lori Carrell (Communication), CST director.
Other regular fall events hosted by the CST continue including the SOTL Scholars Showcase and Luncheon scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., and the annual Provost’s Teaching and Learning Summit, Oct. 26-30. Deadlines have been established for continuing SOTL faculty development programs:

SOTL Starter Grants: Monday, Oct. 5, 5 p.m.
Teaching Project Proposals for Faculty Development Program: Sept. 18, 2009 and Dec. 2, 2009.
Research Project Proposals (including SOTL projects) for Faculty Development Program: Dec. 2, 2009.
Faculty Sabbatical (including SOTL projects): Mid-September 2009 for the 2010-2011 academic year.
UW System OPID (Office of Professional and Instructional Development) Teaching Fellows and Scholars Program: Early fall application date pending; see OPID Web site for current projects and previous application/award details.
The STEPS (Provost’s Scholarly Teaching Leaders, Scholarly Teachers) and other programs already in progress will continue throughout the fall semester.
