How
to Apply for Grants at UW Oshkosh
Internal Review Form
All requests for extramural support that involve the University’s
name and/or resources must be approved through an internal review process,
which is initiated by the Internal Review Form available from the Office
of Grants and Faculty Development. A PDF
form
is available on-line as well. A completed Internal Review Form, accompanied by
your final proposal, should reach the Office of Grants and Faculty Development
not less than five working days prior to the mailing deadline.
It takes time to review and approve a grant proposal. As you begin to
prepare the proposal, talk with your chair, or equivalent, to obtain informal
approval. Also, remember to contact the Office of Grants and Faculty Development
at an early stage and, if necessary, your dean. Prior communication of
your intentions makes formal approval much easier and faster.
The Internal Review Form is completed by the project director and, along
with a copy of the proposal, must be routed in this order:
- Department chair (or equivalent) for quality and compatibility with
department objectives, staffing needs, and salary requirements.
- Dean (or equivalent) for quality and compatibility with college
and University goals, space and support requirements, and cost-sharing
commitments.
After the proposal has been approved by your chair and dean, bring the
Internal Review Form and proposal to the Office of Grants and Faculty
Development for completion of the University review procedure:
- Office of Grants and Faculty Development Director for general compliance
with University policies and agency regulations and cost-sharing commitments.
- Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services for budget review and
certification that it has been reviewed and approved by the appropriate
University offices.
- Associate Vice Chancellor-Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs for
budget implications and compatibility with University goals and policies.
If your grant proposal requires an institutional signature, DO NOT sign
your own proposal. The only person who has legal authority to sign is
Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Thomas Sonnleitner, or his
delegates. The Office of Grants and Faculty Development will coordinate.
Some proposals require additional clearances, which are as follows:
- Chair, Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Participants
(IRB), if the project requires research involving human subjects (contact
the Office of Grants and Faculty Development for the application form
or view Instructions For Completing
the on-line IRB Application).
- Chair, Animal Use and Care Committee, if the project requires research
involving animals (contact the Office of Grants and Faculty Development
for the name of the current chair).
- Chair, Hazardous Waste Committee, if the project involves toxic or
radioactive material (contact the Office of Grants and Faculty Development
for the name of the current chair).
- Chair, DNA Advisory Committee, if the project involves certain experiments
involving DNA (contact the Office of Grants and Faculty Development
for the DNA Registration Form).
- Clearance for computing or space needs should be obtained before the
review process is initiated. The Office of Grants and Faculty Development
can help obtain these clearances.
