MATH 547: Introduction to Group Theory

3

A group is an algebraic system described by a set equipped with one associative operation. Groups contain an identity element and every element has an inverse. Group theory has applications in diverse areas, such as art, biology, geometry, linguistics, music and physics. The kinds of groups covered in this class include permutation, symmetric, alternating and dihedral groups. Some of the important theorems covered are Cayley's Theorem, Fermat's Little Theorem, Lagrange's Theorem and the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Abelian Groups. 342/542
