ELEM ED 726: Social Studies and Literacy

The main purpose is to enhance the teaching and meaningful integration of social studies and literacy in elementary and middle schools. It addresses the place of standards, "best practices" in teaching and social studies and literacy, multicultural concepts and ideas and authentic assessment in both subjects. The course focuses on different types of literacy; various literary genres; criteria and resources for identifying the best literature to integrate with social studies; and appropriate reading and writing strategies for promoting students' literacy and learning in social studies.
