Planned Giving

Through gift planning, you have the opportunity to decide the legacy you want to leave behind. Along with providing for your loved ones, you may choose to make a gift to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation. With a gift to the UW Oshkosh Foundation, you can make an impact on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and our students for years to come.

Types of Planned Gifts:

WILLS AND LIVING TRUSTS

A simple way to support the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation for years to come is through a charitable bequest. You can direct a specific amount of money or a percentage of your total estate as an unrestricted gift to be used where it’s needed most or designated to the purpose of your choice. This type of gift allows you the flexibility to change your mind at any time and your estate to benefit from a charitable estate tax deduction.

Sample Bequest Language

UW Oshkosh Foundation staff would be happy to assist you and your attorney in developing a bequest that best suits your needs and interests. We offer the following sample language as a starting point:

Percentage of estate, unrestricted purpose: I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation, Inc. in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, ___ percent (%) of my residuary estate as an unrestricted gift to be used in the area of greatest need.

Percentage of estate, restricted purpose: I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation, Inc. in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, ___ percent (%) of my residuary estate to be used for ___________________.

It is understood and agreed that should the purpose for which this bequest is instituted cease to exist, then the UW Oshkosh Foundation may devote said bequest for such other uses and purposes as it determines to be in accordance with my original intent in making this gift.

Specific amount, unrestricted purpose: I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation, Inc., in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the sum of ________ dollars ($) as an unrestricted gift to be used in the area of greatest need.

Specific amount, restricted purpose: I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation, Inc., in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the sum of ________ dollars ($) to be used for ___________________.

It is understood and agreed that should the purpose for which this bequest is instituted cease to exist, then the UW Oshkosh Foundation may devote said bequest for such other uses and purposes as it determines to be in accordance with my original intent in making this gift.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS

By naming the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation as a beneficiary on your retirement plans or life insurance policies, you ensure your legacy and support of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation’s mission even after your lifetime. You simply name the Foundation on your policy's beneficiary designation form. Not only is it an easy way to give, but it's also flexible—you can review and adjust beneficiary designations any time you want.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

A charitable gift annuity can support the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation and provide you and/or a loved one with fixed payments for life. When you create a charitable gift annuity to benefit the UW Oshkosh Foundation you can receive a variety of tax benefits, including a federal income tax charitable deduction.

If you are younger than 60 or don't need your payments immediately, you can set up a deferred gift annuity. This allows you to delay receiving payments until a later date—such as after you retire.

Upon the annuitant’s passing, the remaining principal of the donor’s initial gift will go towards the designated purpose agreed upon by the donor and the UW Oshkosh Foundation.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST

A charitable remainder trust pays you or other named individuals every year for life or a term of years. In addition to the income you will receive, you will also be entitled to a partial charitable income tax deduction. When the trust term ends, the remaining principal is distributed to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation as a lump sum.

There are two ways to receive payments with charitable remainder trusts:

With an annuity trust, you receive a fixed dollar amount annually that you determine when establishing your trust. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments.

A unitrust pays you a variable amount annually based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments fluctuates, depending on whether the value of the trust has increased or decreased.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST

With a charitable lead trust, you can support the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Foundation while also ensuring the principal of your gift transfers to your heirs. The trust makes regular payments to the UW Oshkosh Foundation for a fixed term of years or the lives of one or more individuals. After the term ends, the remaining assets, including any appreciation, pass to your heirs.

There are two ways charitable lead trusts make payments:

A charitable lead annuity trust pays a fixed amount annually to the UW Oshkosh Foundation. This option is more appealing when interest rates are low.

A charitable lead unitrust pays a variable amount annually to the UW Oshkosh Foundation based on the value of the assets in the trust, with payments increasing if the value of the trust increases.
