Carla Roberts Special Education Teaching Scholarship

The Carla Roberts Special Education Teaching Scholarship was created by the January 2008 UW Oshkosh graduate, in gratitude for assistance she received as a student. Recipients must be single parents with financial need majoring in special education. Roberts was chosen class speaker for the December 2007 Commencement ceremony. In her address she spoke about the ripple effect caused by pebbles tossed in water and challenged her fellow graduates “to give back, to toss your pebbles of kindness. Any pebble you reach down and grab from your path in life and toss to someone else will make a difference.” Kathy Devereaux was named the first recipient of the Carla Roberts Special Education Teaching Scholarship.

Lifelong Learner Scholarship for Academic Excellence

Non-traditional student Kathy Devereaux established this scholarship during her final semester at UW Oshkosh in the College of Education and Human Services.  Kathy received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984 from Cornell University and returned to school in 2003 to pursue a dual degree in elementary and special education. The scholarship is intended to recognize the accomplishments of returning students who may or may not have had a successful experience at another school, but have excelled in college as an older student. The unique challenges of non-traditional students, whether it be family commitments, the balancing of work and school or the sacrifice of funds while returning to college are factors which make the achievement of high grades even more difficult. Kathy believes that education is a gift, especially as a returning student. The scholarship is in recognition of the accomplishments achieved at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and is open to students in all areas of study.
