Bequests
One of the most rewarding types of planned gifts is that of a bequest, a gift made in a will. A bequest allows donors to retain full ownership and use of their assets during their lifetime, but ensures that their designated assets will be distributed in accordance with their wishes as dictated in their will.
Bequests generally take one of three forms:
- a specific percentage of an estate
- a specific dollar amount
- a specific item (i.e. a work of art or a book collection)
Regardless of the form, a bequest can be either restricted (designated for a specific purpose or fund, such as a scholarship named in your honor) or unrestricted (providing UW Oshkosh with the greatest flexibility to apply the funds where needed). Bequests are also deductible against federal estate taxes and state inheritance taxes in most cases.
The campaign team would be happy to assist donors and their attorneys in developing a bequest that best suits their needs and interests. For more information about planned giving and bequests, contact Sue Neitzel, Capital Campaign Director at (920) 424-0255.
