Curriculum

  1. Requirement to enter into the major program: Complete 1st year Japanese (Japanese 110 and 111) or pass a placement test demonstrating equivalent skills
  2. Requirements to graduate with B.A. in Japanese Studies
      • Minimum 2.25 GPA in major courses
      • Complete the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test or ACTFL OPI
      • Complete an oral exit interview (in Japanese)
      • Submit three performance assessments (student choice) from three different courses used in the major plus the Senior Thesis to be part of a student portfolio

 

Course Requirement (Required credits: 33 minimum)

 Group 1 Japanese Language Study – 14 credits. (All Courses Required)

    • JAPANESE 210       Introduction to Japanese III (4 credits)
    • JAPANESE 211       Intermediate Japanese I (4 credits)
    • JAPANESE 310       Intermediate Japanese II (3 credits)
    • JAPANESE 311       Intermediate Japanese III (3 credits)

Group 2 Japanese Culture in Global Context – 3 credits. Select 1 course from the following:

    • ART 317                  Art History, Art of India, China and Japan (3 credits)
    • ENGLISH 221         Asian American Literature (3 credits)
    • ENGLISH 361/561  Asian American Literature (3 credits)

 

Group 3 Japanese History and Culture – 9 credits. Select 3 courses from the following:

    • ENVSTDS/ENGLISH 244       Japanese Nature Writing (3 credits)
    • HISTORY 375                         Traditional Japan (3 credits)
    • HISTORY 376                         Modern Japan (3 credits)
    • JAPANESE 315                      Bilingual Approaches to Japanese Culture and Society (3 credits) Prereq. JAPANESE 310
    • RELSTDS 337                        Japanese Religion (3 credits)
    • RELSTDS 344                        Zen Buddhist Practice (3 credits)
    • RELSTDS 345                        Zen Buddhist Art and Literature (3 credits)

 

Group 4 Capstone – 3 credits. (Required)

Group 5 Electives – 4-6 credits. Select 2 courses from the following:

      • JAPANESE 360       Special Topics in Japanese (2-3 credits) Repeatable
      • JAPANESE 446       Independent Study (1-3 credits) Prereq. JAPANESE 310
      • Group 3 courses not already used in Group 3
      • Completion of an internship program

     

    NOTE:
      • The major is a collaborative program created with UW Whitewater. Courses offered by UW Whitewater through distance-education are not listed above.
      • Appropriate classes taken in Japan in an exchange program officially endorsed by UW Oshkosh or UW Whitewater may be substituted for language and culture courses that cover equivalent or similar content.
