Language Schools - Open All Year 'Round

Many UW Oshkosh students have studied during the summer and interims at various language schools in Germany and Austria.

One popular educational organization is the Goethe Institute, a German government organization that promotes German language and culture. There are Goethe Institutes in numerous German cities and these experiences permit you to mix with learners from all over the world and walks of life.

Other programs that offer short-term experiences are:

•  ActiLingua Academy in Vienna, Austria and 
• Cultural Studies Academy in Salzburg, Austria. 

Goethe Institut

The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institution operational worldwide.

They promote the study of German abroad and encourage international cultural exchange, and also foster knowledge about Germany by providing information on its culture, society and politics.

With a network of Goethe-Instituts, Goethe-Centres, cultural societies, reading rooms and exam and language centers, the GI has played a central role in the cultural and educational policies of Germany for over 50 years.

The Goethe-Institut draws its information from the many sections of our cosmopolitan society and culture, combining the experience and ideas of partners with cross-cultural expertise. They work on the principle of dialogue and partnership, offering our support to all those actively involved with Germany and its language and culture. The Goethe-Institut is an autonomous body and politically independent.

The Goethe-Institut embraces the politico-cultural challenges of globalisation. The GI achieves this through communication, developing innovative concepts for a more humane world where cultural diversity is welcomed as an enrichment of our society. The Goethe-Institut partners are public and private cultural institutions, the federal states, local authorities and the world of commerce.

Much of the Goethe-Institut's overall budget consisits of yearly grants from the German Foreign Office and the German Press Office. Their relationship with the Foreign Office is governed by general agreement.

Self generated income and contributions from sponsors and patrons, partners and friends broaden the scope of their work.

The Goethe-Institut carefully coordinates its activities with other mediators of cultural and educational foreign policy.

ActiLingua Academy

Cultural Studies Academy 

Founded in 1963, to facilitate educational college credit bearing programs, the Cultural Studies Academy (CSA), features its annual European Summer Study Program in Salzburg, Austria, and has grown to include quality historical, cultural, academic, and specialty tours throughout the world for exclusive clients, groups and associations.
