Study Abroad in German

Have you just started learning German, but cannot wait to study abroad, yet also do not want to “lose” a semester by studying abroad in the fall? The International Undergraduate Study Program (IUSP) offered at the Philipps-Universität Marburg gives you the opportunity to take German language courses at the beginning or intermediate level along with a variety of content courses in English. Courses are regularly offered in subjects such as American and British Literature, Business, History, Political Science, Archaeology, and Geography. Unlike other universities in Hessen that offer coursework in English, the IUSP Program in Marburg runs from September to December and from February to June. For more information, visit: http://www.uni-marburg.de/iusp. To apply, please see OIE Study Abroad Advisor Brad Wiley (Dempsey 146) and visit: http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/abroad/handbook/apply.php

There are many opportunities for study in German-speaking countries, ranging from intensive 4-week summer courses to semester and year-long programs at a German university. Other possibilities include internships in your professional field, or au pair work in a German-speaking family. For more information on study abroad opportunities, contact Dr. Wade-Sirabian wade@uwosh.edu and the Office of International Education.

Studying in Germany is smart investment in learning German and becoming familiar with its culture. If you are a German Education Major or Minor, you need to study abroad to fulfill the DPI residency requirement. No matter what kind of program you choose, you will find many opportunities to experience German culture firsthand and to practice the language to which you have already committed so many hours of study and practice.

There are a variety of programs in Germany from which to choose. There are year-long and semester-long programs, as well as summer programs of varying length. In addition, there are short-term programs available during the Fall and Spring Interim.

For those students who have already decided upon a profession or who would like to combine study abroad in Germany with career-related experience, there are organizations which arrange internships for students who meet certain qualifications.

There area a few considerations you must keep in mind while planning to study abroad in Germany. One is how studying abroad for a time would affect your course of study at UW Oshkosh. Another consideration is that German academic year is structured differently than ours. Its first term runs from October-November to February and its second term runs from April to the end of July. Many UW Oshkosh students who study abroad in Germany for one semester prefer going in the spring so as to avoid missing out on any portion of the UW Oshkosh academic year. Lastly, students should study abroad for a semester or year only if they have completed at least two courses on the 300-level. The semester-long IUSP Marburg Program, which offers language courswork in German and content coursework in English, and shorter summer programs are available for students on the beginning and intermediate levels.
