The Department offers majors and minors in French, German, Japanese Studies and Spanish. We also offer beginning- and intermediate-level courses in those languages and in Arabic, Chinese and Russian.
The ability to communicate in another language gives one direct access to other cultures and perspectives and is an invaluable asset for students wishing to live and work abroad or in the increasingly diverse U.S. Foreign language study promotes sensitivity to linguistic and cultural variety and, in so doing, fosters the essential civic characteristics of tolerance and open-mindedness. In a world of increasing global interdependence, intercultural awareness and competence can be critical to both personal and professional fulfillment.
There are additional benefits to the study of a foreign language. Foreign language students often begin to look at their native language and the culture(s) associated with it with heightened awareness. Moreover, sustained and intense foreign language study improves overall learning as students inevitably make connections to other subjects across the curriculum.
