Air America: The CIA’s Secret Airline
Air America: The CIA’s Secret Airline (2000) Revealing account of how CIA, created in 1947, linked up with the remnants of the Flying Tigers and the Nationalist Chinese in Taiwan to create a ‘secret’ airline that was a covert arm of U. S. policy in Asia. I was familiar with Air America’s activities in Vietnam, especially with the mountain people and in facilitating drug trade as part of this arrangement. I was not aware that Air America often flew pilot rescue missions that were deemed too risky for the USAF. Most surprising was Air America’s critical role at Dienbienphu. Evidently, CIA was operating C-119 Flying Box Cars to supply Dienbienphu up to its surrender. Thus, the U. S. involvement with the French in 1953-1954 was as a semi-combatant.
