Martin Luther (2003)
Martin Luther (2003) How did a humble German monk split Christendom and usher in the modern era? This 110-minute PBS video answers this question in gloriously entertaining fashion. It was filmed in Europe with production values worthy of Hollywood. I think there is an assumption that great historical figures are supremely confident and steadfast in their own beliefs and actions. Nothing could be further from the truth in Luther’s case. Luther’s early torment about his worth as a man and a Christian are compelling to watch. In my opinion, the despair he felt upon his first visit to the opulent Vatican City may be the best segment of the film. His difficult journey to define his relationship with authority figures – whether father, pope or God – would ultimately provide the death knell for the medieval synthesis of the Western world. If you have time for only one video, this should be it. You may learn as much about your own faith as you do of Martin Luther’s.
