Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey

X Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey(1989) Professor Joseph Campbell was one of the world's most influential mythologists. His writing on the hero first gained him national recognition. In the late 1970s a filmmaker wanted to do a biographic film about Campbell. The reluctant professor retorted: “Goddamnit, I’ve spent all my life trying to stay out of the way of this stuff [biography]—all my life. I don’t want to get into it now….The reason I don’t want to be lionized is because I don’t feel like a lion.”

Finally, he ‘semi-acquiesced’ for a film that principally followed his final lecture and discussion tour across the United States. One gets a fine feeling for the man and the mythologist. For a fuller biographic account see Stephen and Robin Larsens’s A Fire in the Mind: The Life of Joseph Campbell (1991).
