The Battle of Orgreave (2001)

The Battle of Orgreave (2001) This portrays a re-enactment of the miners strike in Orgreave (Great Britain) that took place on 18 June 1984. The demonstration culminated in a confrontation between thousands of men and the police in the fields and lanes of Orgreave. The young artist Jeremy Deller reconstructed these events with the help of actors and volunteers from Orgreave who had personally experienced the 1984 events. This re-enactment reconstructs the memory of the main protagonists- miners, policemen and union historians- of 1984 events that were partly blocked from the public British societal memory, of the British society. This film of Mike Figgis is part of an ongoing process of communicating traumatic memory through re-enactment.
