Egypt (1953)

Egypt(1953) This color documentary, portions of which were shown on CBS television, is a comprehensive snapshot of Egypt a year after the military coup d’etat by General Mohamed Naguib and Lt. Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser. Filmed by Keith Wheelock, director of the American Students for International Understanding, the Revolutionary Command Council, including Naguib, Nasser, and General Amer are captured at work and at home. From Alexandria and the Mediterranean to Aswan and the original Aswan dam the contrast between traditional Egypt and a modestly-modern Egypt are portrayed.

Those who speak of Gaza today would be interested in seeing Gaza of 1953: a sparse tent city, because the Egyptians did not wish these Palestinians to become permanent residents. This was and is a country dominated by the Nile. The contrast between city life in Cairo and the southern provinces, or even the delta region, is stark.
