Grant. While General Grant’s military reputation has long been acknowledged, his later years have seemed to discredit him. One has greater sympathy for Grant as a human being seeking to do what is right for the country. Even when those around him were corrupt, Grant seems honest and well intentioned. After several financial setbacks, while dying of cancer Grant laboriously wrote Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant: Selected Letters 1839-1865, which was well received and provided financial security for his wife.
