The History of the United States, 2nd Edition (2003) Personally I prefer the lyrical essays by Staloff, Masur, and Shenton in the original Teaching Company edition. Nonetheless, I acknowledge that Shenton especially was long-winded and, at times, unfocussed in his mesmerizing story telling. Professors Allen Guelo, Gary Gallagher, and Patrick Allitt provide, in 84 lectures, a more straight forward survey of U. S. history. With the exception of a few lectures, including Professor Allitt’s insightful end-of-course reflections, I find the original essays a more enjoyable listen.
