Underground Railroad

Underground Railroad(1998) This is an important History Channel documentary that traces the underground railroad from its earliest days, when Afro-Americans fled to Seminole territory, then to the later efforts to flee northward. Of particular interest is the ample documentation of how this movement functioned in southern Ohio. Against incredible odds, many thousands of slaves continually sought to risk the flight to freedom. There is no attempt to quantify the number who succeeded and those who paid the price for failing to escape. Bernice Johnson Reagon's The Songs Are Free (with Bill Moyers) provides keen insights into how slave music was integral to the underground railroad.
