Ship of Slaves: The Middle Passage (1996) The History Channel presents a stirring account of the infamous Middle Passage, the nature of collecting and incarcerating potential slaves, and the slave trade in America. Only perhaps 500,000 of about14 million African slaves went to North America. The account of the Amistad (the only occasion when slaves were permitted, by the U. S. Supreme Court, to return to Africa) was singular counterpoint to the treatment of slaves in North America. Also of interest was reference to the last slave ship to reach North America--in 1888, eighty years after such importation declared illegal.
