U. S. S. Liberty Survivors: Our Story (1992)

Keith Wheelock (Raritan Valley Community College)

On June 8, 1967, Israeli ships and planes attacked and sunk an American electronic listening U. S. Navy ship, killing 54 Americans and wounding 171 more. The incident was hushed up both by the Israelis (who claimed, in the face of incontrovertible evidence, that it was all just a communications error) and by the American government. This story has been kept alive in this factually credible video and in a companion book, Assault on the Liberty by James M. Ennes, Jr. Even today it is unclear why Israel continuously attacked this ship in international waters, killing and wounding over 200 Americans. My best guess is that the Liberty was monitoring tactical Israeli army messages and that Israel had some top-secret activities to hide, during its blitzkrieg 1967 attack against Egypt. The internal U.S. Navy record has been sanitized, so we may never learn the true story.
