The Clinton Years (2001)

Keith Wheelock (Raritan Valley Community College) kwheelock@patmedia.net

This contemporary PBS video, relying on former White House aides and other Democratic sources, focuses on the 'two Clintons': the one who would go into tailspins (reference to awaiting the 'incoming' shells), and the 'Comeback Kid,' who was extremely skilled in surviving. The basic tone is disappointment with what President Clinton might have been. Almost nothing is said about foreign affairs and there is little substantive assessment of Clinton's domestic programs. Newt Gingrich is presented as Clinton's 'savior,' with Clinton reviving after his key government budget shutdown in 1995. The tone of this video matches that of Elizabeth Drew's 1994 On The Edge.
