Living in the lingering wake of the Idi Amin regime of terror and intolerance, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Ugandan coffee farmers challenged historical and economic hurdles by forming “Delicious Peace” Cooperative. Their mission was to build harmonious relationships and economic development, and they are succeeding. Partnering with a Fair Trade US roaster, the farmers’ standard of living is improving, peace is flourishing, and their messages of peace and fair wages are spreading to their coffee customers in the US.
Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean is a 40-minute documentary narrated by actor Ed OʼNeill that tells the farmersʼ uplifting and inspiring story. The documentary was produced by nonprofit multimedia company JEMGLO in Montclair, NJ, Since its founding in December 1996, JEMGLO has produced six documentaries, all of which have been broadcast on PBS channels across the US and screened worldwide, garnering numerous awards.
“Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean" was awarded Best Short Documentary at the NJ International Film Festival.
Director / cinematographer / editor Curt Fissel has received Emmy nominations, a Cine Golden Eagle, and many journalism awards over his 30-year career. Producer/writer Ellen Friedland also produced, wrote and researched six award-winning documentaries widely distributed to PBS stations and screened at worldwide events.
Narrator Ed OʼNeill plays Jay Pritchett in the popular current TV series Modern Family. He also played the iconic Al Bundy in Married With Children for ten years and has starred in countless TV shows, movies, and theater productions. He said he chose to narrate the documentary because: “This co-op puts food in the mouths of kids. The documentary can raise awareness about it, which will ensure better food, medicine and education for the farmers.”
