Textbook: The
Saga of Mathematics, A Brief History by Lewinter, & Wildulski
Grades: Grades
will be based on the following:
Two in class group presentations of problem solutions for 25%
of the grade each for a total of 50%
Four
quizzes 5% each and class participation for a total of 26%
Weekly
Group Homework Assignments 24%
Grades of A, AB, B, BC, C, D, and F can be earned as semester grades using the following scale: 90-100 A, 85-89 AB, 79-84 B, 74-78 BC, 68-73 C, 60-67 D, 0-59 F
No make-up quizzes will be given. The average of
all previous quizzes will be used to replace the missing scores for one missed
quiz. There will be no exceptions made on these rules!
You
will be assigned to a group of four students for class presentations and weekly
completion of homework assignments to be turned in at the beginning of class
each Monday. You will not be required to meet as a group outside of class, but I strongly encourage you to meet as a
group outside of class to study and work together on assignments whenever
possible. In addition to the group assignments, there will also be
additional problems and exercises assigned each week that will not be
collected. Items from these assignments will be quizzed. I may also without
prior warning ask to see a completed assignment on any Monday,
the week after the assignment was given. If and when I do, that will be used as
part of the class participation grade.
Attendance at all weekly classes is required. Class attendance will be carefully recorded and will affect your semester grade.
I am allergic to most scented cosmetics,
including lotions, perfumes, after shaves, and colognes. Please do NOT wear scented cosmetics to class or when you come for an
office visit. Thank you for your understanding.
There will be no exams given.
Complete the assignment for the week during
the week and before the beginning of the next Monday class. For example the
assignment for February 4 should be completed before you arrive in class on February
11.
